Ever wonder if your job will someday be replaced by a highly intelligent computer program? It’s already happened to many of us over the past decade or so. Aspects of video-editing are now being performed by AI, which currently simplifies a video editor’s job but could evolve into an overtaking of the position as a whole.

The AI Timeline

While AI has been in the media more lately, it’s been developing for around 80 years. In 1940, a machine called the Enigma was decoded during WWII and 15 years after that a man named John McCarthy coined the term “AI.”

Modern Examples of AI

Magnifi is an AI that has the capacity to edit live video. In an article published by TechTarget, one capability of the AI is picking highlights of content like sports games, video games, or live streams. Up until now, this function has been performed by either the video’s creator, or an editor who was hired by the creator. However, Magnifi isn’t taking over the position of video editor any time soon. There are still kinks that need to be addressed, such as the AI only basing its edits off of past information rather than live information.

The most recent innovation in the world of AI is the creation of ChapGPT. This is a chatbot created by OpenAI that, in short, can take wildly specific requests and execute them to completion in a matter of minutes. As you can imagine, this has raised many, many questions from students, educators, and just about everyone who understands what AI is. A student could, in theory, ask ChatGPT to write their 10 page final paper on the impact of inflation on low income communities and yield a viable final product. While this could be the reality, who’s to say an AI to counteract ChapGPT won’t be created relatively soon? An in-depth explanation of ChapGPT can be found here.
