Gus grows up learning the truth about who he is while learning how to survive in the dystopian world. This new Netflix series was inspired by Jeff Lemire’s comic series. Jim Mickle is the co-writer and director of Sweet Tooth. This heartwarming story begins with Christian Convery, as Gus, being half-human and half-deer. Being a hybrid gave him features that allowed for great hearing and smell that had helped him survive in the woods with his father, Pubba. Will Forte, as Pubba, did not want Gus to know what was outside of those woods. Pubba knew that the world was scary and that people would kill Gus if they had seen him. Gus was a special hybrid since he was the firstborn out of many.
There was no civilization or knowing anything about the outside world for Gus. Pubba had taken him to the woods where he took the father role and adapted to the lifestyle. Gus was a hybrid which was also known as “the sick” and people were out to kill them to end the “virus.” If a hybrid was located in this post-apocalyptic world, pink ribbons would be tied to fences or anything near their location. When hunters see the ribbons, they hunt them down and kill them or give them to the government.
Because Gus was only a kid, he did not know how dangerous his life would be in the outside world. Pubba did everything to give him a regular life. He wrote Gus books, cooked him food, and did everything to keep him alive. When Pubba passed, Gus was on his own. Pubba left him a picture of a woman that Gus thought was his mom. Gus had dealt with a lot of emotions, and because he was a kid, he made an impulsive decision because of his anger. He did the one thing he knew not to do which was having a fire during the day. This allows for anyone miles away to find you just by the smoke filling the air. In this case, it worked out for Gus because he met Nonso Anozie, as Tommy Jepperd. This man used to be a bad guy and would hunt the hybrids, but he knew Gus was special and he wanted to help.
The bond between Gus and Jepperd became stronger and stronger as the show went on. Gus gave Jepperd the nickname “Big Man,” and Jepperd gave Gus the nickname “Sweet Tooth.” The meaning behind Gus’s nickname was from him simply loving sweet things such as his maple syrup and chocolate bars.
The actors in this show did a fantastic job at creating a connection with one another. The director made the story through the eyes of Gus, and he made it happen. The tone for this tv series was set by Gus and the way that he saw life and people. Having the story from his perspective allowed for it to be about his journey rather than the pandemic itself.
As Gus begins to be more curious about his mother, he and Jepperd start the journey to find her. Jepperd did not plan on staying with Gus and was planning on leaving him, but he did not. Nonso Anozie did a great job at acting and expressing his emotions. His character grew as the show went on and the friendship between him and Gus became a bond that no one could take from them. This moving story does not end with Gus finding his mother, but rather finding what his mother had done to him. Gus is not the only hybrid. There are hybrids of different animals and not all of them can talk. The camera work in this film is the perfect pace for this dystopian story. From a comic series to a drama series, it was been a great success. Sweet Tooth’s series is available on Netflix.
