Last year, Aldi’s 60 second advertisement of Kevin the Carrot boosted the supermarket chain’s sales by 15% and with such popularity, he is back again. But this year, he isn’t looking for Santa. Instead, he takes a romantic journey to find his true love!
This year, the advertisement narrated by Jim Broadbent pokes fun at numerous films that we are all familiar with such as Titanic and Murder on the Orient Express.
Starting off as a snowman’s nose, Kevin becomes dislodged by an approaching Polar Express like train. Echoing Murder of the Orient Express, Kevin boards a “midnight express train” where a gingerbread man bas been “murdered.” The gingerbread also makes us think of Shrek.
On the train, Kevin meets Katie, the female carrot and his love at first sight, on a pile of mince pies. Katie is holding a book that says ‘Nine and a Half Leeks,’ which is a pun on the famous erotic memoir Nine and a Half Weeks that later turned into a film in the 1980s.
With overall romantic yet suspense atmosphere created by flying wine corks and falling pepper mills, Kevin throws himself to save Katie from a flying pea. Our lovable and courageous Kevin reminds us of The Bodyguard. (We will save the punchline and another movie reference for your own viewing).
By the end of the advertisement, Kevin and Katie recreate a beautiful scene from Titanic at the front of the train.
