Some people call the constant pumping heart of our country, Washington DC, “The City Of The Young”. With its continual influx of a younger population swamping the city almost every season this causes the cities constant self renewal. Millennials are in constant and rapid overload here. The city is in around-the-clock fast pace and has a great location with Virginia and Maryland as its bordering states, also two places with a depth history. As an undergraduate student coming from Massachusetts, when I came here I was very optimistic to live the “Big city life”. This is a place full of education, politics, history, and new opportunities in almost every field imaginable. Washington has a big reputation because of the fact that this is a place that hosts so much of the past and so much of the future all at once. This is one of the leading hosts for our countries young professionals, people that will soon mold and shape our country. Due to the city’s political power it gives people the opportunity to find new and innovative ways to stand up, make a change and make a difference within themselves and their communities. When I made the decision to come here in October of 2016, I planned to come here and embrace the hopeful, optimistic atmosphere and to utilize this city in every way possible.
In this past election there has been a lot of change in the atmosphere here in DC. For me going from the outside looking in to now becoming a insider I see that the appearance of this city of the reputation of it has change for both the outsider and the inside. In the short time Donald Trump has been the president their has been a number of protests and boycotts of companies that are invested in him, his agenda and/or his administration. DC has went from a place of optimism to a place of activism along with many other major states and cities in America. Everyone who can is taking this opportunity to use their voice to the fullest extent. With it being a few weeks into his administration, its definitely a interesting time to be here in the capital.
Since being here I have seen that so many people have traveled from all over the country to march in the many protests still going on in DC almost every few days. For every policy he passes there is a protest to match. Rain, sleet or snow people from everywhere come here with their signs, posters and merchandise, demanding for their voices to be heard by the president, their fellow Americans and the government as a whole. These protesters have been adamant in using our nations first amendment to the extent of its abilities. They remind of our fortunes and power as citizens of the United States. The first amendment allows us as citizens to stand up for, or against the good, the bad and the ugly that exists in our country and what better place to do that than our nation’s capital. For me, I am optimistic about being an activist being here at the time I am has inspired me to not only learn from this change in environment but also to be the change and make sure that I am doing as much as I can while I can and as best as I can, so I guess you can say I’m in the right place at the right time.
