I’ve been watching BET’s Lift Every Voice Episodes for the past few weeks while I am cutting down the shows for the dot com website. Yet at first, I didn’t really have a sense for what subtle things needed to be removed from the segments except for the obvious parts.  Therefore, most of the time, I just enjoyed watching these interviews and thought they were pretty well done and inspiring.  So, here came an important lesson I soon learned: every frame counts in the world of editing.

Timecode

The visual might look nice but the audio might be incoherent when I just rough cut out a section of music we could not display online.  The interview or audio might sound good but the visual have a flash frame if I didn’t pay attention to that, frame by frame.  Therefore, I made a lot of thoughtless mistakes, such as letting different bump-outs show up in segments within one episode, accidentally unsynchronizing audio and video tracks, and upcutting a sound (usually the beginning consonant or vowel) of the host or the guests.  Yet after much patient explanation and instructions, I have become more familiar with how to edit segments in terms of an editor’s standard.  And I believe I am continuing to get better and better as I continue to edit the LEV shows for BET.com/LiftEveryVoice uses.
