At this year’s Sundance Film Festival, which took place in Park City Utah last week, 10% of the screened films were all funded through Kickstarter. And according to The Creators Project, some of them have also been picked up for distribution.
This is great news for independent film makers and creative ideas for two reasons, the most obvious being, that it’s becoming more and more possible to pursue creative endeavors without having the soul-sucked out of you by consistently having to write grants and suck up to rich people. The other reason is good for the consumer. The projects that get made will be things that audiences actually care about / want to be entertained by, and perhaps most importantly, they will be films (and series’) that have increasingly high production value.
It’s sort of comforting to know that it seems that the internet is becoming a powerful tool for creative ideas and original stories. While all the majors spend their money on remakes, reboots, sequels, and superhero movies, us regular folk will be spending our money on helping to create art — that will also be commercial.
